Illustrative photographyDescribe what has changed
Whiplash refers to a neck injury related to a sudden movement of the head. Discomfort and stiffness may not begin immediately. Neck pain also has causes unrelated to a collision, so a symptom description is more useful than trying to diagnose yourself from a photograph or an online checklist.
Give the clinician the full picture
Before a visit, note whether pain stays in the neck or travels to a shoulder or arm. Describe any changes in sensation, strength, headaches, sleep, or comfortable movement. Share the timing of the accident and whether another medical team has already evaluated you.
Bring existing reports if you have them. Tell the clinician about medications you use and previous neck problems. This helps avoid treating every symptom as a new accident-related finding.
Discuss a plan you can follow
Use the appointment to ask what activities are appropriate, which symptoms should prompt another call, and when progress should be reviewed. Care is individualized. Rehabilitation, medication discussions, further testing, or referral may be considered depending on the assessment; none is automatically needed for everyone.
Get urgent help for concerning symptoms
New weakness, difficulty walking, or severe symptoms after a neck injury need prompt medical attention. Seek emergency help when symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening. Do not drive if your movement, awareness, or medication effects make it unsafe.
